Shadows
Shadows—beneath the sun,
Between the leaves,
Across the moss they run
In Deep Woods:
Beneath the trees, no sound,
The silence deep he weaves
In grace across the ground
Of Deep Woods.

Moonlight gleams and is gone.
The stars in dark eyes pool.
The dusky herald of the dawn
In Deep Woods,
Like twilight's ghost he glides
In darkness dim and cool.
Light from darkness he divides
In Deep Woods.

Cloven hooves tread light.
The branching antlers frame
The far-flung sparks of light
In Deep Woods.
Silent the song he sings,
As unknown as his name:
He breathes the very heart of things
In Deep Woods

And never has been seen
Since Terhan's desperate flight
When, russet gleaming in the green
Of Deep Woods,
He paused before he ran
And—glory of the sight!—
Gave unto that halfgrown man
The Deep Woods.

The Grey Wolf of Keleris

The grey wolf of the forest ranges far and free
From Blackwater to Marca's Pass,
Beside the wind across the grass:
The dead leaves rustle as they pass,
And the grey wolf of Keleris shall come back to me
As sure as the sun melts the snow on the lea
Or the Lake's Daughter runs to the sea,
Or the Lake's Daughter runs to the sea.

Blackwater Lake is as deep as the sea
And as black as the starless night:
It is kindled to gold by the light
As my heart is lit by the sight
Of the grey wolf of Keleris riding to me
As sure as the sun melts the snow on the lea
Or the Lake's Daughter runs to the sea,
Or the Lake's Daughter runs to the sea.

Black are his eyes, that I hunger to see:
I wait when no moon's in the sky,
And the wind out of Shainsa runs high.
And soon 'tis with him I shall lie
For the grey wolf of Keleris alone shall wed me,
As sure as the sun melts the snow on the lea
Or the Lake's Daughter runs to the sea,
Or the Lake's Daughter runs to the sea.

Eliot of Keleris shall ride down for me:
My father's at feud still: e'en so
With him as his bride I gladly will go
For sure as the springtime, there's one thing I know
There's no man but Eliot ever for me
As sure as the sun melts the snow on the lea
Or the Lake's Daughter runs to the sea,
Or the Lake's Daughter runs to the sea.

The grey wolf the forest no longer shall see:
He went to Blood River and died.
My father said it, but my father lied
And I'll still to Blackwater and there be his bride,
For Eliot of Keleris will come back to me
As sure as the sun melts the snow on the lea
Or the Lake's Daughter runs to the sea,
Or the Lake's Daughter runs to the sea.
